Healthy land, healthy future

Our place in the world is an area of unique natural beauty. We’re committed to taking great care of it and managing contaminated land. By doing so, we’re helping to ensure the safety of our environment and our people. We’re also enabling growth without compromising the health of our land or being limited by past activities.

With a non-negotiable commitment to the safety of our travellers and airline partners, understanding and addressing the risks of bird strike is also a critical and ongoing activity.

Our three main areas of focus around biodiversity are:

  • Wildlife Hazard Management – minimising the interaction between wildlife and aircraft
  • Contaminated Land Management – responsibly managing historically contaminated areas (such as landfills and borrow pits) and where possible, developing them into usable commercial land
  • Looking after our ecologically significant sites – managing these areas to ensure they can continue to function as healthy ecosystems.

Our biodiversity priorities

Integrated wildlife hazard management

  • Managing new developments to minimise bird strike risk
  • Monitoring and encouraging surrounding land users within a 3km radius of the airport to reduce bird habitats
  • Focusing management on key risk species.

Protecting future use from past activities

  • Identifying and investigating areas of potentially contaminated soil
  • Where contaminated soil is present, using management plans to ensure construction and future land use protects people and the environment
  • Ongoing monitoring of historic contaminated land use sites.

Managing remnant sites of ecological significance

  • Protecting surviving Dry Plains Grassland ecosystems
  • Identifying site boundaries.
