How long have you worked for Christchurch Airport?
I originally started in 2014. Since then, I’ve had two maternity leaves and spent some time away following opportunities in Franz Josef for a year and then in Nelson for three years. I returned two years ago, and with each return taking on slightly different role I haven’t looked back.
What keeps you coming back?
The team here is fantastic, and the unique nature of airport operations makes the work genuinely interesting. Christchurch Airport is really three businesses in one, and each part operates a bit differently. That variety keeps things fresh and challenging, especially from a finance perspective.
How would you define the ‘three businesses in one’?
There’s the aeronautical side, which is all about landing, servicing, and departing aircraft. Then the commercial side, which includes car parking and managing the terminal experience. And finally, the property side, which focuses on developing and leasing buildings. Each area has its own rhythm and challenges, which makes for a diverse and stimulating environment.
What role do you and the finance team play?
We're considered an 'enabling team', supporting various departments across the airport. To support the business properly, we need to understand what’s happening across all areas. That includes external financial reporting, compliance, and budgeting—making sure we stay aligned with our strategy and deliver on our financial commitments to our shareholders CCHL and Treasury.
What do you love most about your job?
Definitely the interactions. I’m not just behind a desk with spreadsheets all day—I get to work with people across the business, understand what they're working on, and figure out how finance can help enable their goals.
That’s quite a refreshing image of accounting!
We're not your stereotypical accountants quietly buried in spreadsheets all day. Accountants now are collaborators. We work closely with teams across the business and spend just as much time communicating and problem solving as we do calculating.
Are there any airport initiatives you’ve been particularly impressed by?
Lately, I’ve really enjoyed seeing the transformation of our food offering in the terminal. The airport is like a small town, and the terminal is our local hub so it’s great to see that space evolve. It’s not just for passengers; we get to enjoy it too. The deep-fried sushi has definitely become a favourite of mine!
What’s something most people wouldn't know about you?
It was a while ago now, but I played women’s rugby for Canterbury NPC. We travelled around the country playing other provinces. It was a great experience, and probably not something people expect from someone working in finance! The sport taught me a lot about teamwork and resilience, so it’s especially rewarding now to watch my daughter out on the field, running around and loving the game.
What are you happiest doing when you're not working?
Our family loves a bit of challenge and adventure. We’re currently managing the build of our home build in Sumner while living in the tiny home section of the house. When I’m not holding a tape measure or pushing a wheelbarrow, you’ll usually find me at the beach, watching our three kids and the dog out surfing or mountain biking around the Port Hills.
What's something you're looking forward to this year?
Finishing our house and living in a bit more space!
Lastly— any advice for someone wanting to start their career at the airport?
Keep an open mind. There are so many diverse roles here and businesses that interact with the airport. You can be a firefighter to a property manager. Once you get your foot in the door, the opportunities are endless.
